Stitch Density at the Bench: A Seam and Hem Audit of the $16.42 Polo Ralph Lauren Black Bear-Print Top
- Published
- Revised
We ordered the $16.42 Polo Ralph Lauren black bear-print top and audited its seams, hem and neckline on the bench. Stitching held up. The round neckline, the "HL" brand field and the missing size chart did not fully resolve.

We ordered the Polo Ralph Lauren black polo shirt in casual streetwear style — SKU 7701995591, $16.42 against a listed original price of $18.71, marked in stock — and sent it to our garage bay off Southeast Powell Boulevard. Our testing team's goal for this round was narrow: not the print and not the laundry basket, but the construction. If a $16.42 cotton top is going to survive daily wear, the seams and hems are where it either holds or does not.
What arrived, and what the listing says
The parcel held one short-sleeve top in black. The spec sheet describes a loose, oversize cut, regular sleeves, a round neckline and a printed animal motif on the front, in 100% cotton with softness listed as medium. Sizes run S through XXL. Body length is given as a range — 50cm to 65cm — which covers the whole size run rather than any single size, and no chest or shoulder figures appear anywhere on the page.
Two details in the listing copy are worth keeping in front of you. First, the brand field reads "HL," not Polo Ralph Lauren. Second, the neckline field reads round neck, or crew. A collared shirt with a buttoned placket is not what the spec sheet describes, whatever the product name suggests. Both are seller-supplied fields, so we treat them as claims to verify, not facts.
The bench audit
Priya Raghavan measured stitch density at four checkpoints, counting three separate runs at each and averaging them under a loupe lamp. Readings are per inch.
| Checkpoint | Stitches per inch (mean of 3) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shoulder seam | 9 | Straight, no puckering or skipped stitches |
| Side seam | 9 | Even tension from underarm to hem |
| Sleeve hem | 8 | Clean single-needle finish, no raw edge |
| Bottom hem | 9 | Approximately 1.2cm turned under, no twisting |
For a shirt at this price, that is tidy work. We found no loose thread tails longer than 3mm and no seam that pulled open under a light tug along its length. The hem sits flat when the shirt is laid on the table, which is the failure point we see most often in cheap cotton knits.
Neckline recovery
The round neck is the one place the construction felt ordinary. Using our spring tension gauge, we pulled the neckline to 4kg twenty times and let it rest. It returned to within about 2mm of its flat measurement after thirty minutes — acceptable, not impressive. If you are between sizes and plan to pull the shirt over your head repeatedly, take the larger size.
Three cold washes
We cold-washed the top three times, inside out, air-dried flat each time. The black stayed black when we compared it against the original photograph under a 5000K lamp; we could not see dye transfer onto the white load we washed alongside it. The printed bear motif showed no cracking, lifting or edge dulling. Flat measurements after the third wash matched the pre-wash numbers within our measurement tolerance.
Colour codes and the size question
The option list is long: print codes running from 763 up through 817, each repeated across white, black, brown and blue, plus two greys at the top of the range. The black shirt we tested is code 763. Because every code shares one SKU and one page, the photographs and the option list are the only reliable way to see what a given variant actually looks like. Read them per variant, not per brand.
Community opinion on the brand-level product is mixed and, importantly, not about this listing. In r/FashionReps, a buyer who owned three Polo Bear shirts described them as excellent quality and very soft, though that post is years old and concerns a different item. In r/preppy, one commenter calls Ralph Lauren one of the few mass-market brands that still focuses on quality. Against that, a long-running r/malefashionadvice thread argues none of the brand's products are truly best in class. We did not find a single independent review of SKU 7701995591.
"do you think RL have over used the polo bear? I don't mean on sweaters, but using it on socks, hats, t shirts, ties etc." — r/RalphLauren commenter
That is a taste argument, not a quality one, but it is worth knowing if you want a print that reads as understated. On a black ground the motif is the loudest thing on the shirt.
What we would confirm before ordering
- Ask the seller for flat chest, shoulder and body-length measurements for your exact size, since the page publishes none.
- Confirm whether the neckline is a crew edge or a collared placket — the listing says round neck.
- Ask what branding appears at the chest, neck tag and care label, given the "HL" brand field.
- Check the option code you are choosing against the corresponding photograph rather than the headline image.
How we tested
We ordered SKU 7701995591 at $16.42 to the Portland bay. Priya Raghavan logged stitch density at four seams, hem flatness, neckline recovery over twenty pulls on the spring tension gauge, and three cold washes with post-wash flat measurements. Raw log went to the editor-in-chief; score 4.0 / 5.
Frequently asked
What measurements should I request before ordering?
Ask for chest, shoulder and body length for the exact size you want. The page gives body length only as a 50–65cm range covering the whole run, and publishes no chest or shoulder figures at all.
Will the black bleed or fade in the wash?
Our three cold washes produced no visible dye transfer onto a white load and no dulling under a 5000K lamp. Wash cold and inside out, and air-dry flat if you want to hold the original measurements.
What is the listed price and availability?
The catalog shows $16.42 USD against an original price of $18.71, SKU 7701995591, marked in stock. Listings like this change often, so check the page again before you buy.

Seams fine, print fine, but the missing size chart is a real problem. I ordered based on the model photo and it came up short in the body. Neckline is round and a touch tight. If you have broad shoulders, size up. Stitching itself I have no complaints about.

Finally someone actually counted stitches instead of just saying "good quality." I did the same on mine, got close to the same numbers on the hem. Neckline ribbing is the weak point, it relaxed a bit after three wears. Still, at $16.42 the construction punches way above the price.

Bought two. One had a tiny loose thread at the left cuff, other was perfect. For sixteen bucks that's a coin flip I'll take. Bear print survived a cold wash inside out, no cracking yet. Wish they listed measurements, I measured my chest at 40 and the medium was snug.

The audit is fair. Stitching held up fine on mine, I checked the armholes and the shoulder taping, all consistent. But "HL" on the brand field? Mine says Polo Ralph Lauren on the inner label, so that detail threw me. Round neckline sits a little high for my taste. Not returning it, but I wouldn't pay more than the $16.42.

Got mine last week for $16.42 and honestly the seams are better than I expected at this price. Single needle around the neckline, no twisting after two washes. Hem is a clean double fold, maybe 3mm wide. The bear print is a bit plasticky up close though. And yeah, no size chart anywhere on the listing, I guessed a M and it fit like a slightly boxy L.
